On November 8th of 2018, Ijevan branch of YSU hosted a seminar on “Media Literacy: Journalism and Society “, organized by Eurasia Partnership Foundation’s Northern Branch (EPF) together with Ijevan Branch of Yerevan State University.

The seminar was conducted by Eurasia Partnership Foundation’s Northern Branch program coordinator, Varsik Nerkararyan.

The training-discussion was attended by students of YSU IB Journalism Group, coordinator of the works with graduates and external stakeholders, public relations and media officer.

The purpose of the seminar was to introduce the essence of the media, goals and objectives, the basics of media literacy, to explain the media-society connection and the impact of the media on society.

Agenda:

  • What is media?
  • What are media tools?
  • How to orient in modern media stream?
  • How to distinguish true and false information?

It was emphasized that the purpose of the media literacy seminar was not to create a literate media producer, but rather to create a competent media consumer, and for the latter, first of all it was necessary to understand how the media was created.

Owing to group works and role-playing games organized during the seminar, the participants learned how the media was actually created.

Role-playing games also helped the participants understand how media targeted their audiences and how to understand it as a media consumer and make wise decisions.

During the seminar, the impact of the current media producers on the society has been discussed.

At the end of the seminar on “Media Literacy”: Journalism and Society, the participants received certificates.

The photos of students receiving certificates are available in the Gallery.
