On April 26th, 2019, YSU Ijevan Branch hosted a seminar entitled “Education in the USA”, organized by the “Community Center for Development” Territorial Non-Governmental Organization together with YSU Ijevan Branch.
The seminar was conducted by the US Peace Corps’ Community and Youth Development Program employee, teacher, trainer and tutor, William Jody Dosher, and YSUIB Student Susanna Sarukhanyan provided syncronic translation.
The general item of the discussion was the education in the USA and its system. J. Dosher mostly touched upon the education of the largest universities of Colorado, namely, Harvard, Louisiana, as well as several colleges and high schools.
It was emphasized that each educational institution was distinguished by its own rules, credit system. The most important part of the topic was the tuition fees of US universities for students living in states, students living outside the United States, as well as for foreign students.
Thus, students in the US universities are assessed according to the following principle: 1-A, 2-B, 3-C, 4-D, which differs significantly from the Armenian assessment system. If a student gets 0, this means, he/she fails the exam. During the academic year, there are set hours for each subject, but there are also compulsory subjects such as foreign languages to be taught at universities. The speaker also mentioned the negative aspects of education in the United States, such as the rapid increase of tuition fees every year.
