On July 17, 2024 a speech on the topic “Post-Soviet Experience of Street Names: the example of Ijevan” was held at Ijevan branch of YSU, which was conducted by Vladimir Poghosyan, a lecturer at the Department of Armenian History and Social Sciences, head of the “Zartonk Ijevan” grant program.

The speech was attended by members of the administrative staff of YSU IB, lecturers and students.

It should be noted that the grant program is implemented within the framework of the “We Are, Our Mountains” program of EU4Culture, funded by the European Union.

Referring to city names and, in particular, the issue of street naming and renaming, the speaker noted: "City names are able to convey historical and cultural information, show the historical experience of the city, local or regional peculiarities. Both urban space and city names are influenced by the socio-cultural processes of time, serving as a bridge between the past and the present. City names are present in every form and content of the relationship between urban space, are part of the everyday plot of urban life, national and urban myths and folklore. City names influence differentiated perceptions of the territory and also play a symbolic role, developing the discourse of spatial symmetry and harmony."

V. Poghosyan also noted that the main part of the city names of Ijevan was formed in the 50s-60s, when as a result of detailed planning, the main streets, squares and parks were determined, and the general education network was expanded. At that time, there were about 35 named streets in the city, one third of which were dedicated to Soviet and local party-revolutionary figures. The first announcements appeared on the pages of the most important security, economic, cultural, regional newspaper of the first months of independence, in which the “issue of renaming Hovsepyan, Ochamchiryan, Gharagyozyan, Tavrizyan, Yenok streets and the first alley of Yerevanyan street” in Ijevan was put forward for discussion. The issue of renaming streets in Ijevan was raised in 1992, when, according to the decision of the executive committee of the city council, Ochamchiryan street was renamed Eritasardakan street, the fourth alley of Yerevanyan street was renamed Antarayin street, O. Zalakyan Street - Saralanji Street, Hovsepyan Street and Square - Azatamartikneri Street and Azatamartikneri Square, M. Cholakhyan Street - Nalbandyan Street.

In the second part of the speech, detailed and three-dimensional modeled images of the center of Ijevan and the industrial district were presented, which represented the experience of designing the city center and squares, architectural problems and solutions.

The speech ended with a question and answer session.

Acting Director of Ijevan Branch of YSU A. Makaryan touched upon the “Zartonk Ijevan” grant program and noted that through such programs it becomes possible to study the urban environment and its problems, to raise the level of public awareness. In the end, the director thanked the team implementing the program, emphasizing the importance of implementing such programs and involvement in them.
