May 28 is the day of the foundation of the first republic of Armenia. On that day, in 1918, the Armenian National Council declared the establishment of an independent Republic of Armenia. The centuries-old dream of the Armenian people to restore independent statehood came true.

The first republic of Armenia was born in the midst of the heroic battles of May (Sardarapat, Bash-Aparan, Gharakilisa), which are truly one of the turning points in our history. Independent Armenia was created about 1000 years after the fall of Bagratid Armenia and 600 years after Cilician Armenia.

The first Prime Minister of independent Armenia was Hovhannes Kajaznuni. The tricolor was adopted as the national flag of Armenia. On the anniversary of independence, May 28, 1919, the government, which was already headed by Alexander Khatisyan, proclaimed Armenia an Independent and United Republic.

The first republic of Armenia lasted only two years, until December 2, 1920, when the 11th Red Army entered Yerevan and the republic was Sovietized. However, its historical significance is great, its role in the restoration of Armenian statehood is invaluable.

Republic Day has been officially celebrated since 1992, when Armenia regained its independence.

According to the RA Law “On Holidays and Commemorative Days of the Republic of Armenia”, adopted by the RA National Assembly on February 21, 1996, May 28 is celebrated as Republic Day.

On behalf of the Directorate and all staff of Ijevan branch of YSU, we congratulate all Armenians on Republic Day, we wish our people unity, strength, wisdom and strong will to overcome all the challenges and difficulties facing us with honor, and our state - strengthening, development and prosperity.

Long live May 28, the Day of Restoration of Armenian Statehood, long live the Armenian people….
