December 7 is the Day of Remembrance of Earthquake Victims and Disaster Resilience.

On December 7, 1988, 37 years ago, in the northern region of the Republic of Armenia, about 150 km south of the axis of the main Caucasus mountain range, a devastating earthquake (later called the Spitak earthquake) occurred, which claimed thousands of lives and caused massive injuries, collapses.

The earthquake occurred at 7:41 a.m. Greenwich Mean Time (11:41 a.m., 22.7 s). The intensity at the epicenter was estimated at 10 points. The destruction zone, where the earthquake intensity was 8 points and above, was formed by three thousand square meters. About 20,000 people in Gyumri received injuries of varying degrees, the number of victims was 25,000 people.

17% of the entire housing stock of the Republic of Armenia was destroyed, 170 industrial enterprises ceased to operate, great damage was caused to villages, the agro-industrial complex, architectural, historical, monuments. The city of Spitak was completely destroyed, 80% of the residential, social and industrial stock of Leninakan (now Gyumri), the second city of Armenia, was destroyed.

To this day, we continue to overcome the consequences of the devastating earthquake.
