- Earth Day event at YSU Ijevan branch
The event was organized on the initiative of Emma Temrazyan, Assistant Professor of the Department of Foreign Languages, Coordinator of Armenian Programs of the “Armenian Volunteer Network” (AMVN) organization operating in the USA.
First, the concept of “Earth Day” was presented, as well as the prospects for the optimal use of the earth and its resources. The students not only touched upon the problems of the planet Earth, but also presented proposals for preserving the earth and improving the environment.
It was noted that on April 22, the world celebrates International Earth Day. It was proclaimed on the initiative of Bolivia on April 22, 2009 at the 63rd session of the UN General Assembly. The resolution is co-sponsored by more than 50 UN member states. Various environmental events, actions, and marches are held in many countries around the world within the framework of the day.
In his message on Earth Day, UN Secretary-General António Guterres noted that humanity is behaving like a juvenile delinquent towards Mother Earth: “Nature gives us the food we eat, the air we breathe and the water we drink. At the same time, we are wreaking havoc on nature: we are poisoning our planet with all kinds of pollutants, recklessly destroying ecosystems and species, and destabilizing the climate with greenhouse gas emissions. This is harming both nature and humanity. Working together, we must restore harmony with nature, adopt sustainable production and consumption patterns, and protect ourselves from threats by creating jobs, reducing poverty and promoting sustainable development.” Accordingly, the idea was emphasized that countries should develop new national climate programs aimed at limiting global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius. These programs can be used as national transition plans and national investment programs, serving as a basis for sustainable development for the benefit of future generations.
In the framework of the event’s summing up, E. Temrazyan noted that from January 1, 2027, polyethylene bags and sacks, single-use plastic tableware, as well as foam plastic containers and sticks will no longer be sold in Armenia, which is provided for by the amendments made to the Law “On Trade and Services” and related laws. The organizer of the event also thanked the volunteers of the “Armenian Volunteer Network” organization and all participants for their active involvement and civic stance. He expressed hope that such initiatives will not only be informative, but also inspiring to show a more caring and responsible attitude towards our environment.
