By decision of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Armenia, on that day in 1991, a referendum was held in the Republic of Armenia with the following question: "Do you agree that the Republic of Armenia should be an independent democratic state, outside the USSR?" The Armenian people unanimously (with a majority of 99% of votes) said "Yes" to independence.

The period of the Third Republic was established in the history of Armenia. The Armenian SSR was renamed the Republic of Armenia. The tricolor was established as the flag of the republic, then the coat of arms was adopted.

After the declaration of independence by the Supreme Council, dozens of states recognized the Republic of Armenia. The first was Lithuania, which had recognized the independence of the Republic of Armenia even before the declaration of independence, on August 14, 1991, and after the adoption of the declaration, during 1991, another 47 states recognized the independence of the Republic of Armenia.
