On October 10, 2026, the ceremonial opening of the monument (bust) of Hamlet Sureni Karayan took place in the courtyard of the YSU Ijevan Branch. Karayan was the founding director of the YSU Ijevan Branch, a Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, a Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, and a professor at the Department of Optics within the YSU Faculty of Physics.

Representatives of the university administration and regional and municipal authorities participated in the commemorative and tribute event, including Davit Hovhannisyan (Head of the YSU Rector’s Staff), Tigran Galstyan (Head of the YSU Financial Analysis Department), Mher Otaryan (Director of the YSU Ijevan Branch), Hayk Ghalumyan (Governor of Tavush Province), Artur Chagharyan (Head of Ijevan Community), as well as Hamlet Karayan’s family members and relatives, branch staff, students, members of the university community, distinguished guests, and local citizens. The event began with the national anthem of the Republic of Armenia and the anthem of Yerevan State University, followed by a presentation on the history of the founding of the YSU Ijevan Branch 32 years ago and the key milestones in the rich and meaningful life and work of Hamlet Karayan, a deeply dedicated figure who played an indispensable role in that endeavor.

This day marked a significant occasion in the history of the YSU Ijevan Branch, as the ceremonial unveiling of a monument to H. Karayan took place, a unique tribute of respect to the institution's founding director. The monument was created by sculptor Tigran Bagamyan, an assistant at the Department of Drawing, Painting, and Sculpture within the Faculty of Applied Arts at the YSU Ijevan Branch. During the event, speeches honoring his memory and expressing gratitude were delivered by Mher Otaryan, Director of the YSU Ijevan Branch; Davit Hovhannisyan, Head of the YSU Rector’s Staff; Hayk Ghalumyan, Governor of Tavush Province; Khazhak Karayan, son of Hamlet Karayan; Anushavan Makaryan, Advisor to the YSU Rector and the Director of the YSU Ijevan Branch; and others.

Through these speeches, a portrait emerged of the founding director of the YSU Ijevan Branch, a figure of exceptional talent, a great teacher, an intellectual, the founder of a scientific discipline, a rare human being, and a patriot.

Special emphasis was placed on his significant contributions, particularly his vision of establishing a university in the northeastern region of Armenia and the immense effort he dedicated to realizing that goal. In this context, it was emphasized that the university to be established in the border region was intended first and foremost to address a strategic objective, and subsequently to fulfill its noble educational and scientific-cultural mission.

The Director of the YSU Ijevan Branch, along with Hamlet Karayan’s wife and his grandson, Hamlet Karayan Jr., ceremonially unveiled the statue.

The next part of the event featured the certificate presentation ceremony for students awarded named scholarships for the first semester of the 2026–2027 academic year (the list is available here). Khazhak Karayan presented the "Hamlet Karayan" named scholarship offered at the YSU Ijevan Branch.

The event concluded with national dances.
