- Today is the day of the founding of the first republic of Armenia.
The May heroic battles (Sardarapat, Bash-Aparan, Gharakilisa) gave birth to the First Republic of Armenia, which is one of the most important events in our history. About 1000 years after the fall of Bagratid Armenia and 600 years after the fall of Cilician Armenia, independent Armenia was being created.
The first Prime Minister of independent Armenia was Hovhannes Kajaznuni. The tricolor was adopted as the national flag of Armenia. On the anniversary of independence, on May 28, 1919, the government, which was already headed by Alexander Khatisyan, proclaimed Armenia an Independent and United Republic.
The First Republic of Armenia lasted only two years, until December 2, 1920, when the republic was Sovietized after the entry of military units of the 11th Red Army into Yerevan. However, its historical significance is great, its role in the restoration of Armenian statehood is invaluable.
Republic Day has been officially celebrated since 1992, when Armenia regained independence.
According to the RA Law “On Holidays and Commemorative Days of the Republic of Armenia”, adopted by the RA National Assembly on February 21, 1996, May 28 is celebrated as Republic Day.
On behalf of the leadership and the entire staff of YSU Ijevan branch, we congratulate all Armenians on the occasion of Republic Day, wishing that our state will grow stronger and develop day by day, and our statehood will be further strengthened.
Happy Republic Day, long live May 28, long live the Armenian people….
