During the summer school, leading experts in the field of Scientometrics from Belgium, Italy, Russia and Armenia delivered lectures.

Head of the Scientific Information Analysis and Monitoring Center, Shushanik Sargsyan presented the mission, structure and activities of the center. The main focus of the center is Scientometrics which is concerned with the quantitative features and characteristics of science and scientific research, used to evaluate the performance, efficiency and competitiveness of science systems. The Center is calculating the Impact Factor of national journals, creating and coordinating various scientific databases, organizing scientific awareness-raising activities, and more.

CSIAM’s activity addressees are:

  • Editors of scientific journals,
  • Scientists and researchers,
  • Universities and research institutes,
  • Interested organizations in the field of science and scientific policy.

2

Professor of the University of Leuven, International Science Adviser Wolfgang Glänzel made two lectures during which he presented bibliographical datasets (Web of Science, SCOPUS, Google Scholar), from the point of view of data collection and accuracy, different scientific criteria (how many articles are published by this or that scientist, how many references are made, how is calculated the impact factor of the journal, etc.), scientific issues (copywriting, false thesis, etc.), the peculiarities of the different directions of science in terms of the use of science and its results.

3

Domenico Augusto Maisano, Associate Professor of “National Polytechnic University of Italy, Turin Italy”,conducted a webinar.

He presented the topical issues of the bibliographic database, the most widespread mistakes (including author’s name, title, date of publication, volume, title, and citation of translations, references, etc.) and steps to minimize them.

Viktor Gluxov, Deputy Director of the Russian Scientific Electronic Library (eLibrary), noted that the library, in contrast to the international bibliographic database, is a complete text base that includes articles, dissertations, inventions, and patent applications from Russian and foreign scientists published in different world journals. Different statistics, the best journals of the Library are included in the Russion Citation Index  (RINC, RSCI).

Alexan Shahkhatuni, Scientific Adviser of the Scientific Information Analysis and Monitoring Center, spoke about frauds in scientific ethics, publications, bibliography and scientometrics. He presented anti-scientific, paid services offered by some people and organizations at every stage of the research (disclosure, publicity, dissemination, assessment, etc.), and their negative impact on the scientist’s career and ways of avoiding them.

Dr. Victor Blaginin,Ural State University of Economics, Director of the Center on Scientometrics and Ranking Researches, spoke on scientific magazines, scientometrics, guarantees and international standards.

Denis Kosyakov, a deputy director and scientific researcher at the State Public Scientific Technological Library of the Siberian Branch of the Russion Academy of Sciences (SPSTL SB RAS), touched upon the difficult problems of the field of scientific research. He noted that for individual scholars, research groups, universities and other organizations, depending on the nature and scope of their study, there must be different criteria, few dozens of criteria should be taken into account, and the scientific policy should not be based on only numbers but also on the experts’ data.

Edita Gzoyan, Deputy Head of the Center for Scientific Information Analysis and Monitoring, made a speech about the  scientometrics of social sciences and humanities.

An expert in bibliometrics at the company “Clarivate Analytics” (former “Thomson Reuters”) Pavel Kasyanov presented the scientific publications and bibliometric research statistics of Armenia, comparisons with neighboring and CIS countries, leading sectors, and number of international research programs by partner countries. He also pointed out that the Impact Factor was not an indicator of the effectiveness of scientists, but the quality of the magazine, as well as what was the essence of the category-normalized citation impact (CNCI) and the h- index (H), gave advises on how to use bibliographic data.

Margarita Sidorova, a manager on the works with key clients at the company “Clarivate Analytics”, presented the capabilities for research and integration into world science due to Claritive Analytics. In particular, she mentioned that in 72 million records of the database, one can make a search by subject, author and so on, then clarify the search and classify by year, reference number or other index. She also added that researchers can register in the system to get identity ID (Researcher ID), with the help of which the system works more efficiently when allocating articles with the same surname and name.

In 2018, on October 2, a candle lighting ceremony was held at YSU Ijevan branch, dedicated to the memory of our great compatriot, RA National Hero, French-Armenian singer, composer, writer, film actor, public figure, greatest Armenian Charles Aznavour (Shahnur, Vaghinak Aznavouryan).

On the previous day, October 1, “one of the greatest and brightest stars of the Armenian sky rested in peace”… It is unbelievable. A man who brought up generations by his love, whom we have loved since childhood, followed his art and life, have been proud that there was such an Armenian in the world who kept the honor of his homeland everywhere.

Candle lighting dedicated to the memory of the great Aznavour was organized by the YSU IB Department of French Language and Literature and Student Council

Acting Head of the Department of French Language and Literature A. Mardanyan delivered a speech noting that the eldest son of the Armenian people, who belongs to Armenia, France and the whole humanity has left. She underlined that Aznavour was an individual who always stood by his people, who used his genius and influence so that the whole world would not forget and condemn the Armenian Genocide. Aznavour was a whole universe, and now that universe has remained with us, but without its creator.

The 4th year students of the faculty French Language and Literature presented his life and work under the magical sounds of the songs of Aznavour, and recited poems.

Yesterday when I was young
The taste of life was sweet as rain upon my tongue,
I teased at life as if it were a foolish game
The way the evening breeze may tease a candle flame.
The thousand dreams I dreamed, the splendid things I planned
I always built, alas, on weak and shifting sand,
I lived by night and shunned the naked light of day
And only now I see how the years ran away.
Yesterday when I was young
So many drinking songs were waiting to be sung,
So many wayward pleasures lay in store for me
And so much pain my dazzled eyes refused to see.
I ran so fast that time and youth at last ran out
I never stopped to think what life was all about,
And every conversation I can now recall
Concerned itself with me, me, and nothing else at all.

DSCN3769Yesterday the moon was blue
And every crazy day brought something new to do,
I used my magic age as if it were a wand
And never saw the waste and emptiness beyond.
The game of love I played with arrogance and pride
And every flame I lit too quickly, quickly died.
The friends I made all seemed, somehow, to drift away
And only I am left on stage to end the play.
There are so many songs in me that won’t be sung,
I feel the bitter taste of tears upon my tongue.
The time has come for me to pay for yesterday
When I was young… Young… Young

Acting Director of YSU IB A. Cuculyan delivered a speech, in particular mentioning: “Communicating with our elders, we are cleansed a little, aspiring to betterment, to perfection. The values that Charles Aznavour created and gave will remain in all of us and will inspire hope and belief for all of us to fight, to create kindness, love and solidarity around us. Thank you all! “
