- Invited lecture-master class for students of "Foreign Language and Literature" specialty
On the initiative of the Chair of Foreign Languages of YSU IB, two-day master classes-workshops were held under the title "Language and Power Dynamics in Legal and Medical Discourses", which were conducted by the head of the Department of Languages of "Gladzor" University of Yerevan, science candidate in philology, associate professor Lilit Sahakyan. The purpose of the master classes was to support the senior year students of YSU IB "Foreign Language and Literature" specialty to deepen their knowledge and skills in narrow field discourse (speech), in particular, to be able to recognize and analyze the linguistic and cultural features specific to legal and medical English written and oral communication and through the manifestations of professional power and influence of power.
The topic of the first day's lecture was "Precision and Vagueness in Legal English Discourse (with special reference to last will and testaments and contracts)". During the lecture, it was presented how, with the help of precise selection of narrow field terms, linguistic units from proportional word products, syntactic structures and stylistic tricks, intentional ambiguity is created, while at the same time clarity of speech is ensured. It was explained how to contribute to the clarity of legal texts and the protection of the parties' interests by the precise use of stylistic means, to reduce contradictions by strategic manifestations of deliberate ambiguity.
On the second day L. Sahakyan conducted a lecture on "Balancing Professional Authority with Cultural Sensitivity in Medical English Discourse". In particular, linguistic means of establishing professional authority in English medical speech, methods of maintaining cultural sensitivity through speech, approaches to building trust through clear, respectful and empathetic communication were discussed. A special reference was made to the linguistic nuances of medical English, which contribute to the understanding of medical documents, accurate translation, and accurate understanding of doctor-patient communication during oral translation, as well as, taking into account cultural characteristics, to ensure quality and accurate oral translation.
The master-class helped students to develop skills through the study of vocabulary from specific medical fields that will contribute to analyzing and interpreting written and oral communication in medical English.
